By Michael Gioia
Patti Murin, who starred in the Broadway musical Lysistrata Jones, will lead the concert version of Popesical, a new musical comedy by Adam Overett, May 27 at Joe's Pub in New York City.
Directed by Denis Jones (director-choreographer at the Williamstown Theater Festival, Paper Mill Playhouse and the Broadway Bares cabaret series), the 7 PM concert will feature Marshal Kennedy Carolan (Hair) as Cardinal McCafferty, Lindsay Nicole Chambers (Lysistrata Jones, Forbidden Broadway) as Cardinal Wallaby, Madeleine Doherty (Sister Act) as Cardinalissimo Francisco Franco, Natalie Charle Ellis (Forbidden Broadway) as Cardinal St. Louis, Murin (Xanadu, upcoming Love's Labour's Lost) as Cardinal Robin, David Perlman (Baby It's You!) as Cardinal Bergenstein, Tally Sessions (Big Fish) as Cardinal Hu-Jin Chao and Jason Michael Snow (The Book of Mormon) as Cardinal Fouette.
Popesical: In Concert, according to press notes, "presents a comedic, behind-closed-doors musical look at the secretive pope selection process. In this one-night only concert event, meet the papal candidates as they begin their journey. A hunchback with a Castilian lisp. A shy Australian with a guilty secret. A mute ballet dancer. And more!"
Composer Overett was a Musical Theater Fellow at the Dramatists Guild (2010-11) and a Lucille Lortel Award nominee for his contribution to the score of the Off-Broadway musical We the People (2011). He has also been a resident writer at the Goodspeed Mercer Colony and CAP21 (2013).
Popesical was previously presented as a public staged workshop at the Lyric Theater in Los Angeles in 2012.
Other members of the creative team include Joe Kinosian (musical director), David Withrow (wardrobe), Rachel McMullin (general manager) and Bailie Slevin (producer).
