Sideways, adapted by Rex Pickett from his novel of the same name, begins performances at La Jolla Playhouse July 16.
Directed by Playhouse director emeritus Des McAnuff (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Jersey Boys), the show will continue performances through Aug. 25.
The cast features Zöe Chao (Surf Report) in the role of Terra, Nadia Bowers (The Farnsworth Invention, Tartuffe) as Maya, Jeff Marlow (Glengarry Glen Ross) as Roman/Jared, Mike Sears (His Girl Friday, Bonnie & Clyde) as Chris, Patrick Breen (The Normal Heart, Next Fall) as Miles, Sean Allan Krill (Hit the Wall, Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Jack, Cynthia Mace (The Mandrake Root) as Phyllis, Allison Spratt Pearce (Curtains) as Victoria, Jorge Rodriguez (Love’s Labour’s Lost) as Charlie, Vi Flaten as Evelyn/Babs, Tom Patterson as Brad and Jasmine St. Clair as Waitress.
"Sideways follows two friends — Miles, a frustrated novelist; and Jack, a no-name TV actor and director — and their journey across the Santa Ynez Valley wine country," press notes state. "During one last blowout road trip before Jack is to be married, the two men run tangle-footed into their midlife crises, all the while exploring this once little-known central California wine region."
The creative team includes Robert Brill (scenic design), Paul Tazewell (costume design), Michael Walton (lighting design), Cricket S. Myers (sound design) and Sean Nieuwenhuis (video and projection design). Michael Roth is the composer, Lisa Shriver is the choreographer and Shirley Fishman is the dramaturg.
Pickett's novel was also adapted into a 2004 film of the same title, starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church.
