O'Neill Theater Center Receives $40,000 Grant

By Adam Hetrick
02 Nov 2009

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has received a $40,000 grant from the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust to support the development of new works.

The O'Neill Center will utilize the funding for new play development during the 2010 and 2011 National Playwrights Conference seasons in Waterford, CT.

NPC artistic director Wendy Goldberg said in a statement: "The confidence in our work that the Steinberg Trust has once again demonstrated is deeply appreciated. It is only with the investment and confidence of our funders, like Steinberg, that we have the resources needed to nurture promising new artists and works."

Works recently developed at the O'Neill include the musical adaptation of Tales of the City, with a score by Scissor Sisters' Jason Sellards (lyrics) and John Garden (music), and a book by Tony winner Jeff Whitty; the Daniel Zaitchik musical Picnic at Hanging Rock; as well as the Nilo Cruz play The Color of Desire; Gregory Moss' House of Gold; Josh Tobiessen's Spoon Lake Blues; Emily Schwend's Carthage; and Abbie Spallen's Bogwog.

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center was founded in 1964 and is based in Waterford, CT. Programs at the Center include the Puppetry Conference, Playwrights Conference, Critics Institute, Music Theater Conference and the National Theater Institute. The Monte Cristo Cottage, O'Neill's childhood home, is also owned and operated by the group.
