Malcolm Gets Records New Solo Album for PS Classics

By Kenneth Jones
08 Sep 2008

Malcolm Gets

Actor-singer Malcolm Gets goes into a Manhattan recording studio Sept. 8 to begin work on his first solo album, for the PS Classics label.

John McDaniel will be conducting the orchestra and also serves as album producer. Tommy Krasker, co-founder of PS Classics, told Playbill.com that Gets and McDaniel are working toward an early 2009 release date.

Although the repertoire has not yet been disclosed, this first recording date will include tracks by theatre composers Irving Berlin, Burton Lane, Maury Yeston, William Finn and Richard Rodgers.

Gets' Amour co-star Melissa Errico is expected to join him for one track at this first session.

Gets has appeared in New York in Amour (Tony and Drama Desk nominations), The Moliere Comedies, A New Brain, Merrily We Roll Along at the York Theatre (Drama Desk nomination and Obie Award), The Two Gentlemen of Verona (Obie Award), Hello Again, Boys and Girls, Polish Joke, Finian's Rainbow, Juno and for Encores!, both The Boys From Syracuse and The Apple Tree. He was Richard on NBC's "Caroline in the City." His films include "Thirteen Conversations About One Thing," "Love in the Time of Money," "Adam and Steve," "Sex and the City" and the upcoming "Grey Gardens," in which he stars opposite Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, due out in April 2009. He appears on a dozen original cast albums, as well as Barbara Cook's "Mostly Sondheim," his Carnegie Hall debut.

He starts rehearsals next week for the Broadway-aimed The Story of My Life, a new musical by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, in which he stars opposite Will Chase. The musical, under the direction by Richard Maltby, opens at the Goodspeed Musicals' Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, CT, Oct. 10.
