THE ASTOR PLACE THEATRE, under the direction of Bruce Mailman, opened January 17, 1968, with Israel Horovitz's The Indian Wants the Bronx starring Al Pacino. Other notable productions over the years include Al Carmines' Drama Desk Award-winning Peace (1969); Sam Shepard's The Unseen Hand and Forensic and the Navigators (1970), with Shepard on drums in a rock band in the lobby; Tom Eyen's The Dirtiest Show in Town (1970) with 515 performances; Monsters starring James Coco (1977); Family Business by Dick Goldberg (1978) with 470 performances; Modigliani byDennis Mclntyre (1979); John Ford Noonan's A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking (1980) with 450 performances; A.R. Gurney, Jr.'s The Dining Room (1982) with 607 performances; Larry Shue's The Foreigner, directed by Jerry Zaks (1984) with 686 performances; The Perfect Party (1986), a return for A.R. Gurney, Jr.; and Three Ways Home starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner (1988). It is in the tradition of these exciting pieces that we welcome you to tonight's performance of Blue Man Group in Tubes.
